I was honoured to stand alongside Beki Smith (Athletics Australia) and Alex Winwood (Boxing Australia) for National Reconciliation Week 2021, to support the commitment of Australia's leading sporting organisations committed to reconciliation initiatives, which focus on elevating Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples voices and addressing issues of inequality.
These organisations lead by Sport Australia include: Australian Institute of Sport, Paralympics Australia, Australian Olympic Committee, Commonwealth Games Association, and the entire National Institute of Sports
There are a number of initiatives undertaken by each organisations to advocate, celebrate and recognise the contributions of our First Nations people across Australian society, and also to work towards a more equitable sporting nation.
You can read the full statement here including the initiatives undertaken.
My own commitment has been to be more proactive in learning of the culture, history and challenges faced by our First Nations, and I share some of those learnings here. At Sport Access Foundation we also appointed our first indigenous Board Member Grantley Creighton. Grantley has enriched and broadened our learnings on the challenges for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in sport and beyond.
