For 20 years from being a young graduate to my early 40s, I never spoke about my disability as my instinctive thought was ‘if I disclose my hearing loss they (prospective employer) might perceive me to be less capable.’
Only 7% of people in leadership roles disclose their disability.
I choose to talk about it. But it took me a long time to get to this point.
I want to ensure that the young graduate starting their career today know that they have the same chance of success as their peers without disability.
Sitting on this panel in my capacity as MEGT (Australia) Ltd Disability Experience Manager highlighted how far we have come.
Without hesitation or otherwise I am sharing my lived experiences of hearing and eyesight loss.
We had 383 people of our 634 employees dial in on our Teams Live channel and 60 people in attendance.
The most telling part of this event, was the emails and personal contact I received afterwards.
I had many people from across our offices in every state, reach out to me, to simply say:
Thank you.
